On July 31st, a sunny National Tree Day, a group of Big Lifters brought out their gloves to lend a hand to Ultimo LandCare. We were working on improving the walkways around the train line by bringing back native plants that are low maintenance and create a more pleasant atmosphere. In true Big Lift style we got straight into it and pulled up all the weeds. Next step was to load the wheelbarrow with soil to cover the ground – we made lots of heavy trips and at times struggled to stay on path! Laying newspapers on the ground followed, then covering in mulch and digging holes big enough for the plants. Before we knew it, it was time for morning tea. LandCare went all out with an amazing spread of muffins, cookies, fruit, homemade treats & drinks. We had a nice break and got to chat with the other volunteers.
Afterwards we got straight back into the final stage and started planting and watering the new garden. We had lots of encouragement from the permanent volunteers who were very happy to see the amount of work done in this short time and the difference it made to the area. It was a really satisfying experience to help out LandCare who have dedicated a lot of time over many years to this area. We all had a great time and enjoyed seeing some friendly faces from the Big Lift again.
