What is The Big Lift?
The Big Lift is a not-for-profit organisation that organises an annual week-long volunteering trip in July. During mid-semester break, two busloads of students travel to rural communities where they engage in a range of service projects that in some way, shape, colour or form, assist the community.
As a not-for profit organisation deeply driven by giving back, we want to make a #BIGLIFT difference in as MANY places as we can. Our primary aim is to make a meaningful impact through the work we do and have a lasting effect on the people we meet- one small step at a time. Sure we don't have long in each community, but forty people multiplied by two buses multiplied by altruistic attitudes together form a formula that has the ability to make a #HUGE impact in a small amount of time. Each experience along the way also provides opportunity to exercise initiative, collaborate as a team, build upon leadership qualities, and develop a sense of professional identity.
We also have a lot of fun while we're at it!
When is the trip?
The trip is typically in early-mid July, during semester break, when all formal university examinations have finished.
How much does it cost?
The trip generally costs around $550, plus some additional fundraising activities by the participants. Included in this cost are at least two meals per day, accommodation for the whole week, activities, all transport, as well as all TBL merchandise (TBL t-shirts, drink bottle, yearbook). Thanks to the heartfelt generosity of our sponsors, the trip is heavily subsidised for students.
Who can apply to be a part of it?
The trip is open to any current student of the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). If you are not a UTS student, but are interested in The Big Lift or learning more about the organisation, feel free to contact us for assistance in establishing it at your university. Due to high applicant demand, places on the program are limited and allocated on the basis of an online application.
When do I find out if I've been selected?
Applications open in mid-February. Two rounds of offers are made - an early-bird round at the beginning of April, and the main round in early May. Only a limited number of applicants are selected in the early-bird round.
WHat happens if i don't receive an early bird offer?
If you are unsuccessful in securing an early bird offer, fret not- your application will automatically carry forward for consideration in the main round.
how do i pay for the trip?
Payment is typically accepted as one of either lump sum or instalments.
