Who We Are
The Big Lift is a student-run volunteering organisation at the University of Technology Sydney. Founded in 2010 on the philosophy of 'paying it forward', we provide a platform for students to volunteer and engage deeply with local and regional communities.
We are primarily known for our annual Winter Trip, in which we take 80 students across regional Australia over 9 days, stopping at 9 small communities and engaging in volunteering at each.
We have expanded over the years by introducing Little Lifts and Microlifts – shorter versions of our Winter Trip, and frequent communal volunteering opportunities both on and off our university’s campus.
We are always searching for new ways to expand, grow and reach the people who need our help the most. If you have an idea or a new challenge for us to take on, please suggest an event here.
What We Do
The Winter Trip
Our flagship project, this nine-day, once-a-year trip is what makes participants truly fall in love with The Big Lift. 80 students volunteer across a total of nine towns, working tirelessly and forging memories that will last a lifetime.
Little Lifts
These three-day trips see 20 students spend the weekend volunteering in a small town. We aim to do four trips a year and they always provide a bonding experience and a taster for what it’s like to be on The Winter Trip.
Microlifts
Volunteering that ranges from a one-day trip to an overnight trip held in or around Sydney, where we dedicate a few hours to helping out a local community
Service Projects & More
Throughout the year, The Big Lift runs on and off campus Pay it Forward initiatives. This includes our one-day service projects and Pay It Forward week.
